Major: Legal Studies
Ashley Stannard left college after three semesters and followed a career path in music.
But seven years later, the journey came to a harrowing end.
“I battled depression and lost my father,” she said. “My husband and I faced moments where we didn’t know how we’d afford food or a stable home. Worst of all, I felt like I disappointed my parents, who dreamed of me earning my degree. I took a retail job but still felt stagnant.”
Stannard often thought about pursuing law, so she checked out the Legal Studies program at College of DuPage. Almost immediately, everything fell into place.
“From my first conversation with a program advisor, my eyes were opened, and I saw the advantages of being a part of an ABA (American Bar Association)-approved paralegal program,” she said. “I was drawn in by the hands-on experience, the caliber of courses offered, and the opportunity to refine and enhance my legal writing skills. Each semester, I experienced passionate professors who were not only exceptional in their fields but also brought real-world insight into every classroom.”
During her time at COD, Stannard joined the Paralegal Club, eventually serving as president, and was inducted into the Lambda Epsilon Chi (LEX) National Honor Society for paralegal students. These contributed to her transformative college experience.

“When I began my first semester, I immediately looked for community, a space to connect with others on my same journey,” she said. “One day, I wandered onto the Student Life webpage and discovered the Paralegal Club and LEX. My professor introduced me to Linda Jenkins, the advisor for both clubs. From our very first meeting, Linda and the other members welcomed me with open arms. I also connected with Annie Knight, the new program chair and club co-advisor, who exhibited warmth and kindness toward me. As someone who is normally shy and introverted, this acceptance meant the world to me—I felt seen.”
Stannard worked as a clerical assistant for Knight, playing a role in program’s completion of the ABA reaccreditation process by helping to compile a 130-page audit report. She also volunteered at the DuPage County Expungement Clinic for two years and intends to continue her involvement.
Her most outstanding experience was attending a special legislative visit with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, former COD President Dr. Brian Caputo, Illinois State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, DuPage County Board Chair Deb Conroy, and several other public officials.
“Out of thousands of students, only 14 of us were chosen for this honor,” she said. “In front of leaders who shape our state, we as current students highlighted the significant need for stronger collaboration between community colleges and four-year institutions to help ease the academic transfer process. This moment was so inspiring. I will cherish it forever.”
Scholarship Opportunities at COD
Stannard also received several scholarships through the COD Foundation: the Robert and Linda Jenkins Endowed Legal Studies Scholarship and the Sally N. Fairbank Legal Studies Textbook Scholarship.“Since I was paying tuition costs out of pocket, these awards were crucial to the completion of my academic journey, making it possible for me to continue my studies without the added burden of financial stress,” she said.
In earning her Associate in Applied Science degree, Stannard was named one of the college’s outstanding graduate finalists. She plans to complete a bachelor’s degree from an ABA-accredited university and become a certified paralegal. She currently works at one of the top family law firms in DuPage County and would like to continue growing as a family law paralegal. Long-term, she is committed to expanding access to affordable legal services for underserved communities.
As for her return to college, Stannard is glad she followed her passion for law at COD.
“For the first time in years, I felt like my professors were walking alongside me, rooting for me every step of the way,” she said. “The opportunities, the experiences and the professional connections I gained through this program have changed my life and shaped me in ways that distinguishes this program from others. I am so glad I took this journey. I would not be who I am without this school.”
