The Learning Commons offers COD students a broad range of free academic support options including, math assistance, tutoring, and writing, reading and speech assistance. The Learning Commons can also provide general accommodations for students including:
- Two computers with zoom-text and one large-print keyboard; one computer with JAWS software
- iPads for student to use with tutors while in the Learning Commons
- Earplugs, headphones, daylight lamp, fidgets and other sensory items
- Reduced distraction setting, when available
- Neurodiversity webpage with a variety of academic success and neurodiversity resources for students
- Accommodations Support Specialists are available to consult with students and staff, or assist in sessions if a student's accommodation needs dictate.
Math Assistance - Walk-in Math Assistance
- An initial 30-minute session (instead of 15 minutes) is offered for students registered with the Center for Access and Accommodations. All sessions are one-on-one.
- For a better chance at longer sessions, arrive in non-peak hours (before 10 a.m. on weekdays)
- One calculator available with larger buttons/ display (basic—4-function plus square roots)
- Students are encouraged to disclose any specific needs or requests during their sessions.
Tutoring
- Students should indicate on the Tutoring Services Request Form that they are registered with the Center for Access and Accommodations if they would like Tutoring to know.
- One-on-one tutoring sessions in lieu of group tutoring may be available if a student's accommodation needs dictate.
- An Accommodations Support Specialist reviews student documentation if available through the Center for Access and Accommodations. The specialist will make recommendations to the tutors to personalize tutoring sessions and maximize benefit.
- Information about students with differing needs, support strategies, and training materials on neurodiversity and accessibility are available as resources for tutors.
Writing, Reading, Speech Assistance (WRSA)
- Students with accommodations are allowed four, 45-minute appointments each week in each of the following: reading, writing, and speech.
- An Accommodations Support Specialist reviews student documentation through the Center for Access and Accommodations if necessary. The specialist will make recommendations to coaches to further assist the student.
- Information about students with differing needs, support strategies, and training materials on neurodiversity and accessibility are available as resources for coaches.
