College of DuPage is launching a new Machine Learning certificate for students who wish to enter the artificial intelligence (AI) field. Students in this program will acquire basic knowledge of machine learning and learn to develop AI-powered solutions to complex problems using current AI development technologies.
COD Computer and Information Science Professor Mohammad Morovati was motivated to create the certificate after seeing rapid growth in AI education in other parts of the country.
“I saw that a lot of colleges were not only providing two-year, but four-year degrees in AI,” said Morovati. “I saw it as an opportunity to bring this to COD, so I’ve been working tirelessly to bring the whole thing here.”
The demand for AI machine learning and software development skills is growing in the Chicagoland area, especially with the rapid rise of cloud computing and AI technology, which are quickly becoming relevant to a diverse array of industries.
“(AI) is going to affect everybody, regardless of what you do, from farming to brain surgery to accounting,” said Morovati. “You can become more efficient, and it integrates well. Explainability, ethics and security are also issues everyone needs to be aware of.”
This short-term certificate for Machine Learning is a recognized credential for those interested in an entry-level position in this fast-growing field. Classes in the program include Introduction to Machine Learning, AI Technical Essentials, Introduction to Python Programming and more.
Students in the Computer and Information Science (CIS) Program at COD can earn one of six associate degrees in application and technical support, animation and game design, game programming and development and software development. More than 15 certifications are also available for students interested in taking specialized courses to update their skills.
