Advising and Transfer Services

Academic advising is an essential part of student success at College of DuPage. Our full-time advisors offer personalized, proactive support guiding students throughout their academic journey.

Each semester, you will meet with your advisor to receive assistance with:

  • Course Selection and Academic Planning: Advisors help students choose courses that align with degree requirements, interests, and career goals.
  • Essential Academic Information: Advisors assist students in understanding the curriculum, graduation requirements, and prerequisites for their chosen field of study.
  • Goal Setting - Advisors help students identify and establish both short-term and long-term academic goals, while also supporting them in developing an educational plan to reach those goals.
  • Navigating Institutional Resources - Advisors can provide information and referrals to student support resources, making college a more manageable, less stressful experience.
  • Overcoming Academic Challenges – Advisors can discuss any academic difficulties you may be facing and assist you in developing strategies to overcome them.

As part of academic advising, Transfer Services provides support with your transfer plans, including helping you research colleges and universities.

Peak Advising Periods

Peak advising periods are June through August for fall enrollment and January for spring enrollment. To avoid long wait times of up to two weeks, students are encouraged to schedule appointments outside of these times.

Get Started Today

Whether you are a new student, transferring student or a student on academic probation (S.O.A.P.), complete the following steps before your advising appointment.

Before your first advising appointment, new students should complete these steps:

  • Check that you have met the reading and writing placement requirements.
  • Take the ALEKS math placement test.
  • Send official transcripts from high school and/or all higher education institutions attended.
  • SAT/AP test scores should be requested from College Board.
  • ACT scores should be requested from ACT.org.
  • Request transcripts for dual credit classes taken at any institutions other than COD.
  • If applicable, check to see if you can earn credit by proficiency or the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy.

To smoothly transfer from a community college to a university, students should:

  • Begin researching potential transfer schools, entrance requirements, and application dates. Start by using COD’s Transfer Services.
  • Contact an advisor at your chosen four-year institution to discuss GPA requirements, course prerequisites, and any articulation agreements if applicable.
  • Use iTransfer and Transferology to help you gather necessary information.
  • Become acquainted with steps to transfer.
  • Meet with a COD academic advisor, bringing any university materials and information with you to ensure you are on the right path for transfer.

At College of DuPage, all students are required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good academic standing under the Standards of Academic Progress (S.O.A.P.) college policy.

If your cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0, you will be placed in one of the following statuses:

  • If you’ve attempted less than 12 COD credits, earning under a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, you will be placed on Academic Warning.
  • If you have attempted 12 or more COD credits and earned under a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, you will be placed on Probation 1.
  • If you are currently on Probation 1, and at the end of this semester, your semester grade point average is above 2.0, but your cumulative grade point average is still under 2.0, you will be moved to Continuing Probation 1 status.

Academic Advisors support all students on academic warning, probation 1, and continuing probation 1  status at the College of DuPage.

If your academic standing doesn’t improve, you will progress to Probation 2 and possibly Academic Suspension status. This may impact your ability to continue taking classes. Counseling Services at College of DuPage offers programming to support students who have progressed to Probation 2 or Academic Suspension status.

Contact Advising and Transfer Services to schedule an appointment with an advisor by calling (630) 942-2259 or stop by Student Success Center (SSC) 3100.
