Through a partnership between Eastern Illinois University (EIU) and College of DuPage, educators may complete graduate-level coursework that can qualify them to teach dual credit speech at their high school.
The Graduate Certificate in Communication Processes includes courses designed for teachers interested in offering dual-credit public speaking. To qualify to teach dual credit, individuals must hold a master’s degree in any field and complete at least 18 graduate credit hours in Speech/Communication courses approved by COD. Completion of the certificate itself does not automatically meet credentialing requirements, only the completion of 18 approved graduate credit hours in Speech/Communication. Please note that while EIU may adjust their course offerings, COD reserves the right to determine which courses meet credentialing standards. For example, Mass Media courses cannot substitute for Speech/Communication coursework.
The certificate can typically be completed in one year (3 semesters), and coursework taken for the certificate may also be applied toward the Master of Arts in Communication Studies at EIU. Admission to the certificate program does not guarantee admission into the MA program; students must apply separately if they wish to pursue the degree.
